The City of Orlando is proud to announce the 2026 Black History Month Exhibition Call to Artists at our Terrace Gallery in Orlando City Hall.

The year 2026 marks a century of national Black history commemorations. In 1926, Dr. Carter G. Woodson and the Association for the Study of Negro Life and History (now ASALH) established Negro History Week—the foundation of what we now celebrate as Black History Month.

For one hundred years, this annual observance has shaped how Black history is studied, shared, and celebrated in schools, cultural institutions, and communities across the world. From early commemorations of emancipation and freedom to modern celebrations of creativity and resilience, Black History Month has continually redefined the narrative of America and its place in the global African diaspora.

As ASALH’s centennial theme reminds us, these commemorations are not only about remembrance—they are about transformation. They challenge us to reflect on how the study and celebration of Black history have reshaped identity, empowered generations, and influenced the broader pursuit of equality and justice.

In 2026—when the nation also observes the 250th anniversary of U.S. independence—the City of Orlando honors this enduring legacy through a special exhibition at the Terrace Gallery: “A Century of Black History Commemorations.”

Theme

Inspired by ASALH’s 100th anniversary, this exhibition invites artists to explore the meaning and impact of Black history and its commemorations over the past century. How has the observance of Black history shaped communities, identities, and culture? What stories, movements, or moments deserve to be reexamined, reimagined, or celebrated anew?

Artists are encouraged to reflect on themes such as:

  • The origins and evolution of Black History Month
  • The power of storytelling, education, and remembrance
  • The contributions of trailblazers, scholars, and everyday heroes
  • The resilience of Black communities in the face of erasure and resistance
  • The connection between historical legacy and contemporary identity

Submission guidelines and eligibility

The City of Orlando welcomes a wide range of artistic interpretations of this theme. Submissions may include—but are not limited to—original 2D or 3D artworks such as painting, photography, sculpture, mixed media, or installation.

Works should:

  • Reflect or reinterpret aspects of Black history and cultural memory
  • Highlight the ongoing impact of commemoration, education, or heritage
  • Engage viewers in conversation about the meaning of Black history today

This call is open to local Central Florida–based visual artists whose work engages with the 2026 theme, A Century of Black History Commemorations.
