Business Fire Safety Checklist
Make fire prevention a high priority for your business. Always be on the lookout for fire hazards and make sure you have the proper fire safety equipment.
Electrical
- No extension cords or multi-plug adapters in use.
- No electrical cords extending through walls, ceilings, floors, under doors or floor coverings.
- No damaged electrical cords, plugs or outlets.
- 30-inch minimum clearance maintained around circuit panel.
General Fire Safety
- Combustible storage maintained at least 24 inches below ceiling (18 inches, if there are sprinklers).
- No combustibles stored in furnace or electrical rooms or below stairs.
- Clearance maintained between heat-producing equipment and combustibles.
- Storage maintained in neat and orderly manner to minimize fire spread and facilitate control.
- Dumpsters are a minimum of five feet from combustibles; covers kept closed.
- Compressed gas cylinders are properly secured and contents clearly labeled.
Exits
- Exit corridors and aisles remain unobstructed, free of any material or matter at all times.
- Exit doors are able to be opened from inside without a key, special knowledge or effort.
- Main entry door, ONLY, may have deadbolt lock but is always unlocked during business hours.
- Exit signs clearly indicate exit path, minimum six-inch letters with ¾-inch stroke.
- Exit signs are illuminated when the building is occupied.
Fire extinguishers and fire protection systems
- Fire extinguishers are serviced annually by a State Fire Marshal-licensed company, as well as if discharged or tampered with.
- Extinguishers have a minimum rating of 2A:10B:C and are located at an exit or on an exit path every 75 feet of travel or as otherwise required by the Fire Department.
- Extinguishers mounted 3½ to 5 feet above floor.
- Fire protection systems must be tagged quarterly and annually by a State Fire Marshal-licensed company.
Fire-resistive barriers
- Fire doors and fire dampers must be fully operational.
- Fire-resistive walls and ceilings must not have holes, breaks or missing panels.
Flammable liquids
- Orlando Fire Department restrictions regarding flammable liquids continually observed.
Hazardous materials
- Hazardous Materials Inventory Statement renewed annually with quantity stored and quantity in regular use.
Fire hydrants (private-owned)
- Fire hydrants serviced, tagged and painted annually by a licensed company.
