WHAT:
The City of Orlando is proud to announce the summer launch of its annual Street Tree Program, offering free street tree planting for eligible homeowners within city limits. Running from June 1 through August 31, this program invites residents to request a free tree to be planted along their streets during the following winter season.
Trees play a vital role in cooling neighborhoods, reducing utility bills, mitigating flooding and preventing heat-related illnesses. The City’s program aims to expand urban canopy and enhance the quality of life for residents citywide.
HOW THE PROGRAM WORKS:
Eligibility:
Homeowners must live within the City of Orlando limits to qualify. Residents may submit one application per property online. Applicants will then be contacted to confirm their request status. Apply online at orlando.gov/streettrees.
Tree Planting:
City crews will inspect the proposed planting site to determine the best location and species based on space, underground utilities, and the City’s Right Tree, Right Place policy. Approved trees are planted by City crews during winter months. Homeowners are responsible for watering and caring for their new trees.
Tree Selection:
The City offers a variety of tree species tailored to different locations and conditions, including small, medium and large trees. Species availability varies based on season and supply. Tree options range from shade-providing oaks and maples to smaller ornamental trees suitable for areas with power lines or narrow parkways.
MEDIA INTERVIEW OPPORTUNITY:
To schedule an interview with the City’s Families, Parks and Recreation Reforestation Manager Kathy Hallabout the benefits and impact of the Street Tree Program, please contactAshley.Papagni@orlando.gov.
