City of Orlando and OUC Announce South Street Lane Closures During Next Phase of Summerlin Avenue Improvement Project

Infrastructure project will impact neighborhood roadways to improve critical sanitary, stormwater and fire safety systems

Orlando, FL – April 14, 2025– Starting on Monday, April 28, 2025, the City of Orlando, in partnership with OUC—The Reliable One, will begin the next phase of the Summerlin Avenue Improvement Project, a multiyear plan of essential infrastructure upgrades to OUC's drinking water system and the City of Orlando's sanitary sewer and stormwater systems that will improve service reliability, safety and quality of life for residents.

During this next phase, westbound lanes of South Street will be reduced to one lane for traffic, starting at South Mills Avenue and continuing until the road returns to three lanes just west of the Summerlin Avenue and South Street intersection. This change will last for approximately five months.

North and southbound Summerlin Avenue traffic will be detoured around the closure between East Anderson Street and Pine Street. This latest phase coincides with completion of work at the Robinson Street and Summerlin Avenue intersection which will reopen to traffic on April 18.

Additionally, work that is expected to last about 70 days, will begin on Summerlin Avenue between Robinson Street and Ridgewood Street. Drivers should expect delays along South Street and are advised to use alternative routes.

Summerlin Avenue Improvement Project Background:
This project aims to modernize OUC's drinking water system and the City of Orlando's sanitary sewer and stormwater systems, improving service reliability, safety and the overall quality of life for residents through essential infrastructure upgrades.

Earlier this year, work began to replace nearly 90-year-old outdated infrastructure. The project involves installing approximately 1.25 miles of new water pipes, adding fire hydrants and upgrading critical valves to improve both fire safety and system reliability.

In addition to upgrading utilities, the project will fully restore roadways, improve pedestrian safety and enhance streetscapes. Roadwork will include replacing damaged areas with either brick pavers or asphalt. Pedestrian safety improvements will include new pedestrian signals at key intersections, as well as new crosswalks and curb ramps to ensure accessibility for people with disabilities (ADA compliance). The project also will include sod replacement and tree removal to create a more cohesive and visually appealing streetscape.
